A white wall, a dull façade, a school or a community building: all places that can become the stage for a collective creation. The participatory mural brings together residents, children, associations and artists around a common artistic project. Each person contributes, either freely or guided by the brush of a professional painter, to bring to life a monumental work that tells a shared story.
More than just decoration, this collaborative creation transforms public space into a place of expression, dialogue and pride. The colours, shapes and ideas of the participants become a visible symbol of the community and its values. In Paris, in the regions or anywhere in France, these collective murals brighten everyday life, strengthen the identity of places and leave a lasting mark on the memory of the inhabitants.
With Street Designers, this experience takes shape within a challenging yet accessible artistic framework. Our artist designs the mural to ensure its visual coherence, whilst volunteers complete it under the artist’s guidance. This combination results in a unique collective mural that is always deeply human.
A participatory mural project typically unfolds in several stages. Initially, there's a phase of community engagement and concept development, where the mural's theme and design are discussed and decided upon with local residents, stakeholders, and artists. This often involves workshops, surveys, and public meetings to gather input and inspiration. Following this, the design is finalised, incorporating the collective ideas. This design might be created by a lead artist or collaboratively by a group. Once the design is approved, the practical preparation of the wall begins, including cleaning, priming, and any necessary repairs. The painting phase is where the community actively participates. Depending on the project's scale and the participants' skill levels, this could involve the lead artist or artists sketching the outline, and then community members painting designated sections under guidance. The level of participation can vary, from painting large areas to adding small details. Throughout the process, there are often opportunities for skill-sharing workshops, where participants can learn basic painting techniques. Documentation of the project, through photographs and video, is also common. Finally, a public unveiling or celebration marks the completion of the mural, acknowledging the contributions of everyone involved and the transformation of the space. There's usually ongoing discussion about the mural's long-term care and maintenance.
The creation of a participatory mural is built to measure. It all begins with a meeting to understand your expectations: to strengthen team spirit, to embellish a hall, to unite a neighbourhood, to offer a common project to a school or to decorate a workspace. This exchange serves as the basis for designing a model adapted to the location, client and audience. A vote can be proposed to participants to choose the artist or an artistic style.
Once the mock-up project is validated, the artist prepares the surface and defines the areas for participation. On the day of the painting, participants get stuck in, guided step-by-step. They don't need any drawing or painting experience; the artist guides their movements and maintains the artistic thread. The result remains harmonious while bearing the mark of those who took part. It's a moment of creation but also of sharing. With our support and that of our artists, the experience is seamless and motivating, aiming to create a beautiful, unifying fresco that is true to your identity.
A participatory mural can be created in various contexts. Some examples include: * **Community projects:** Bringing residents together to beautify a shared space, such as a neighbourhood wall, a community centre, or a park. * **Educational settings:** Involving students in schools or art programs to learn about art, collaboration, and their local environment. * **Urban regeneration:** Revitalising neglected areas, engaging the local population in transforming a derelict wall or building into a piece of art. * **Social activism:** Raising awareness about a particular issue or advocating for change, with the mural acting as a visual statement. * **Artistic expression:** As a collaborative art project where an artist works with a group of people to create a unique and shared artistic vision. * **Celebrations and events:** As a temporary or permanent artistic feature for festivals, local fairs, or significant anniversaries. * **Therapeutic settings:** Involving individuals in art therapy or rehabilitation programmes to foster connection, self-expression, and a sense of accomplishment.
Participatory murals in the workplace are ideal for strengthening team cohesion. They allow people to step away from their day-to-day routines, share a creative moment, and leave a lasting mark in the workspace. Whether in an open-plan office, a corridor, a break room, or an entrance hall, they serve as a landmark reflecting the company's culture and values.
In schools, collaborative wall decoration offers pupils or students the opportunity to create a piece together that enhances their environment. It fosters collaboration, listening, and artistic expression, as in The monumental fresco created with 360 pupils at ESSCA in Boulogne-Billancourt.
In public spaces, collaborative urban murals transform facades, walls of municipal buildings, or passageways. Residents are invited to take part in their creation. They thus contribute directly to the beautification of their neighbourhood and see their involvement materialised in a work visible daily. For local authorities, developers, or landlords, it is an effective way to create a sense of community and enhance the image of a place while fostering dialogue with residents.
We also operate under the «1 building, 1 artwork» charter to promote contemporary art in real estate. This scheme, launched by the Ministry of Culture in 2015, aims to integrate contemporary artistic creations into new property projects, with nearly 100 developers already signatories to the charter.
In Paris, Île-de-France, or any other region, we adapt each participative mural to the specificities of the site and the audiences concerned.
What is the support model used by Street Designers?
Organising a collaborative mural for a company or an urban project requires meticulous planning. We handle all project management from A to Z: locating the wall, mediation, artist proposals, mock-up design, site and preparation work, logistics, coordination with local stakeholders, execution, acceptance report and copyright transfer, not forgetting the installation of the explanatory plaque.
The paints used are eco-responsible and selected for their quality and durability. They are environmentally friendly and resistant to time and the elements. The aim is for the mural to retain its full visual impact for many years to come.
What is the purpose of a participatory mural?
A participatory mural becomes a visual and emotional reference point for those who were involved in it. In a company, it brings to mind a special moment of collaboration with the artist. In a school, it marks the passing of a generation and inspires our children. Within a neighbourhood, it tells a shared story between residents and the painter and opens up dialogue.
With our teams, this work also takes on a communication dimension. Videos, photos, an inauguration in the presence of the artists, and creative and festive workshops extend the experience and showcase the artistic approach. The wall thus becomes a support for influence and a storytelling tool.
Local authorities, landlords and property developers also find in participatory mural painting a fantastic tool for added value and cohesion. For a landlord, it is an opportunity to involve the residents in the beautification of their living environment.
For a community, it is a collaborative artistic project that brings together residents, associations, and institutions around a common goal. As for developers, they see it as a way to bring a property development to life and personalise it, leaving a lasting artistic imprint. In all cases, the mural becomes a vehicle for dialogue, shared identity, and enhancing the local area.
What types of wall projects are feasible?
A blank wall, a dull facade or an impersonal interior can be transformed into a medium for collective expression. With a co-creative mural, each participant takes part in a unifying artistic experience and leaves their mark on a shared project.
Our support is tailor-made, from the initial idea to the final realisation. Our team and our contemporary artists conceptualise, guide and enhance your space. The hand-painted wall becomes a work of art.
What budget for a participatory mural?
The cost of a participatory mural depends on several factors. These include the size of the wall, the complexity of the mural to be created, and the number of participants expected on site. At Street Designers, our murals start at around €3,000 for a simple indoor design, and can exceed €20,000 for larger-scale exterior facades or projects involving more complex logistics, such as the use of lifting equipment.
From Paris to its outlying districts, from schools to public buildings, the collaborative mural has established itself as a powerful tool for visual communication and social cohesion. It brings together residents, associations, and institutions around a shared creation that is lasting and meaningful. This type of artistic project is part of a strong trend: placing art at the heart of the city and giving walls a new lease of life, blending citizen expression with heritage enhancement.
Every achievement tells a story, creates a bond and becomes an identity marker for a community. Collaborative frescoes thus embody urban art in its most accessible, inclusive and unifying form.
At Street Designers, we view every project as a unique opportunity: bespoke design, tailored techniques, comprehensive management and artistic guidance. Fancy getting your project off the ground? We have the answers
What is a collaborative mural?
This is a fresco designed by a professional artist, created on an interior or exterior wall, and can involve company employees, residents as part of an urban project, or students from a school wishing to create a participatory mural. Participants contribute to the creation of the wall decoration, under the supervision of a recognised street artist, to create a collective and lasting mural artwork.
How many people can participate in the collaborative mural?
Up to 10 people at a time. It is possible to organise several rotating participation sessions if needed.
Is the collaborative mural fresco prepared in advance?
Yes. A draft is produced by the artist beforehand, according to the client's brief. The artistic style is defined in advance, and we propose a selection of 3 artists to choose the most suitable one for the project.
Quel est le rôle de l’artiste ?
The artist is the master craftsman: they design, paint, and guide participants to help them contribute without compromising the aesthetics of the final work.
Who is this service for?
To all types of clients: businesses, towns, social housing providers, developers, educational institutions... This is not a one-off event but a sustainable artistic endeavour with a decorative purpose.
What is the point of involving employees?
This type of artistic project helps to create social connections and highlights the involvement of participants, who become active agents in the project by contributing at different key stages of the artwork's creation. The mural then becomes a vehicle for meaning, collaboration, and ownership of the space.
Here are the technical constraints of a collaborative mural:
* **Surface preparation:** The wall must be clean, dry, and free of cracks or damage. It may need priming or sealing depending on the material.
* **Paint compatibility:** All paints used should be compatible with each other and with the surface to avoid flaking or adhesion issues.
* **Weather resistance:** The mural must withstand outdoor conditions (UV exposure, rain, temperature fluctuations) and the chosen paints/sealants must be suitable for this.
* **Accessibility:** Whether the mural is painted at ground level or at height will determine the need for scaffolding, lifts, or other access equipment.
* **Lighting:** Adequate lighting is crucial for artists to see their work clearly, especially during evening or indoor projects.
* **Drying/Curing times:** Different paints have different drying and curing times, which need to be factored into the project schedule, especially in the case of multiple layers or sealing.
* **Durability and longevity:** The choice of materials will affect how long the mural lasts and its resistance to wear and tear.
* **Safety:** Depending on the location and methods used, safety considerations such as working at height, handling materials, and public interaction need to be addressed.
* **Scale and proportions:** Transferring a design to a large scale requires careful scaling and consideration of proportions so that the final artwork looks correct.
We operate both indoors and outdoors. Our team takes care of everything. Protections, safety, overalls, gloves, equipment, lifting gear if necessary…
What is the duration of a project?
It depends on the size of the surface. From a day for a small wall to several weeks for a building facade.
Can the fresco be personalised with a company's colours or logo?
Yes, we can integrate your brand’s colour codes and discreetly insert a logo if desired. However, the mural must remain in the DNA of the artist initially chosen.
How much does a collaborative mural cost?
The price depends on the surface area to be painted and the complexity of the fresco. Each project will receive a personalised quote. Please contact us.
Do you offer photo/video coverage?
Yes. We can document the creation for your communication materials (internal or external). To extend the experience, we can also integrate elements such as an explanatory panel, a QR code, or a video making-of, in order to add lasting value to the project.
