At a time when adhesive signs and uniform plastic panels are invading the streets of Paris, as they are across France, the profession of the sign-painter is being reborn with vigour. Behind every hand-painted sign, there is a passionate artisan, a workshop, and a paintbrush that restore meaning and emotion to the decoration of businesses, restaurants, hotels, and local shops. Painting a letter is not mere manual labour; it is a lasting art, a unique creation that tells a story and enhances a brand's identity. Names like Victor Bert or Tristan Gesret, contemporary figures in advertising lettering, prove that this craft spans generations and inspires young graphic designers as much as clients seeking authenticity. In this article, discover why choosing a painted sign is much more than an aesthetic choice: it is a way of transforming a shopfront into a truly living work of art.

At Street Designers, our lettering artists combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary creativity. We breathe new life into a time-honoured craft characterised by confident strokes, a steady hand and masterful curves. Painting a letter by hand gives weight to every word, depth to every message, and elegance to your shop sign.

What is a sign painter today?

A sign painter is a visual craftsman. They design, draw, and hand-paint typography, logos, or graphic compositions directly onto a shop window, wall, storefront, or chalkboard. The stroke is precise, and the finish is authentic. Every curve is designed to convey a message, and every colour shade is chosen to match a brand's visual identity.

Far from being a practice of a bygone era, sign painting is making a strong comeback in cities. Everywhere, restaurateurs, shopkeepers, hotels, and cultural venues are choosing to stand out by having their signs hand-painted, rather than opting for an industrial solution. The result is warmer, more sincere. And above all, it catches the eye effortlessly.

Why have your shop window painted rather than have it printed?

Because you don't address someone with a sticker in the same way you address someone with a brushstroke. A hand-painted shop window shows much more than a name or a logo: it conveys a certain standard, a uniqueness, a respect for detail. It stands out on the street as a strong graphic gesture, sometimes discreet, always memorable.

Inside a restaurant, on a menu board, on the facade of an independent shop, or on the entrance wall of a hotel, traditional painted lettering commands a unique presence. It immediately speaks to passers-by, who intuitively perceive, without even articulating it, that this is a bespoke, careful, hand-crafted piece of work, intended for that specific location and no other.

What you gain in visual credibility, you also gain in differentiation. In Paris, as in Marseille, in Lyon, as in Lille, a hand-painted sign does not go unnoticed. It inspires confidence, reassures, and attracts customers more easily!

On which surfaces can a sign painter be commissioned?

We operate on many formats: glass shop windows, interior and exterior walls, wooden or metal panels, roller shutters, shop shutters, facade signs, but also company vehicles, counters, mirrors or blackboards.

Each handcrafted sign is created according to the medium, its texture, its dimensions, and its exposure. We choose high-end paints, specific to sign painters, durable, compatible with outdoor use, and resistant to UV rays and harsh weather.

We incorporate effects into our fonts: shading, gilding, outlines, distressed effects, varied typographic styles – vintage, contemporary, script, serif, with or without serifs… Each project is a bespoke creation.

What does a sign painting project with Street Designers involve?

The process is simple and controlled. We begin by gathering your brief and requirements: message, atmosphere, colours, and references. We then create a personalised mock-up, which you approve before any work begins. This mock-up can be digital or hand-drawn, depending on the chosen artist's style.

Once the project is approved, our painters create a stencil in the workshop. This is a very old method that allows the drawing to be transferred onto paper perforated with a roulette wheel, and then applied to the surface using chalk powder. This process allows the sketch to be calibrated to the correct scale.

On-site, the artist completes the painting, usually in a single day for a simple shop window, sometimes longer depending on the size and level of detail of the project. Drying time varies, but the result is visible immediately. If necessary, we can work very early in the morning or at unconventional hours so as not to disrupt business.

We support you from start to finish, with rigour, responsiveness and a real eye for detail.

Who are the sign writers you work with?

Our network brings together complementary profiles: former graffiti artists, typographers, painters trained as illustrators, and artisans specialising in traditional sign painting. Some come from the world of graffiti, others from the Atelier des Ocres, the École française de Décor, or the Beaux-Arts in Paris. All share a taste for a job well done, a sure hand, and a love of letters.

We regularly call upon artists such as the Toqué Frères, but we always adapt the profile to the venue's aesthetic. Some prefer ancient styles, others modern lines. We will find the artist who will be most relevant to embody your message.

How much does a hand-painted sign cost?

Prices vary depending on size, medium, complexity of the visual, and on-site time required. On average, professional work starts at €1,500 excluding VAT for a simple project. This rate includes graphic design, preparation of the medium, artist's travel, supplies, and final execution.

Each project receives a personalised quote, drawn up based on your brief or after a site visit. We operate throughout France, with a strong presence in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Lille, Toulouse, and Bordeaux.

What is the lifespan of a signwriting paint?

Painted typography indoors can last for several decades. Outdoors, it all depends on exposure, the substrate, and maintenance. A well-executed paint job, on a clean surface, with a protective varnish, can last 10 years without deterioration. We only use top-of-the-range paints designed for public spaces.

And if needed, we offer refreshment contracts or one-off touch-ups, so your sign retains its shine over time.

Why choose Street Designers?

Because we believe in the return of the touch. Because a hand-painted company logo conveys something different than a vector file stuck on a window. Because in a fast-paced world, a well-drawn letter slows the gaze and captures attention.

We don't just produce lettering. We give your space a signature, character, a presence. And we do it with enthusiasts who deeply love what they do.

We have the answers

The Sign painting, or sign painting, is a traditional craft originating from the graphic arts. Unlike printed or adhesive signs, it involves hand-painting letters, logos, or typographic visuals directly onto a surface using a brush. Each letter is painted individually with great precision to create a unique, durable, and authentic sign. Once long neglected, this savoir-faire is being revived today thanks to the growing appeal of artisanal crafts and the need for visual distinction.

A professional sign writer can work on a wide variety of surfaces:

  • Shop and restaurant windows,
  • Shop fronts and facades,
  • Wooden or metal advertising panels,
  • Shop interior or exterior walls,
  • Company vehicles (trucks, food trucks, cars),
  • Slates and decorative panels for menus or signage.

Each surface is prepared in advance (cleaning, primer, sanding if necessary) to ensure optimal durability of the lettering.

Both are possible. Indoors, painted lettering offers a lasting aesthetic appeal (restaurants, hotels, offices, boutiques). Outdoors, sign painters use paints resistant to UV rays, rain, and temperature variations to ensure excellent durability over time.

Unlike vinyl or plastic adhesive, sign painting offers:

  • A warmer, more artisanal feel,
  • Superior durability with the right paints,
  • A fully bespoke creation, adapted to the graphic charter,
  • A true visual signature, which catches the eye and stands out from industrial supports.

In short, a hand-painted sign doesn't just inform: it tells a story.

Our artists offer a wide range of styles: classic typography, vintage lettering, modern scripts, 3D effects, patinas, or even gold leaf gilding. Each project is designed to reflect the brand's identity and enhance the chosen medium.

  1. Brief initial: understanding of the need, the message and the desired style.
  2. Mock-up proposal (digital or paper) approved by the client.
  3. Preparing the surface (cleaning, priming, light sanding).
  4. On-site intervention with tracing and brush painting.
  5. Finishes and protective varnish to guarantee longevity.

Yes, they vary depending on the project:

  • Safe site access,
  • Support condition (wood, metal, render, glass, etc.),
  • Protection of surroundings to prevent splashing,
  • Drying time (a few hours to 24h).

These constraints are anticipated by the sign painter to ensure an impeccable result.

The duration depends on the size, design complexity, and medium.

  • A simple display cabinet can be made in a day.
  • A complete facade or a large construction site can take several days.

Yes. Sign painting allows for the reproduction of a logo, specific typography, or the creation of a completely bespoke design. Each letter is tailored to the needs of the company, ensuring perfect consistency with its visual identity.

Our sign-writers work across France (Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Lille, Bordeaux, Brittany, etc.) and internationally. Travel expenses are included in the quote depending on the location.

Prices start from €1,500 (excluding VAT) for a simple project (shop sign, shop window).
The final price depends on the surface area, substrate, style, and time involved. Each project will receive a personalised quote including: graphic design, mock-up, materials, travel, and on-site intervention.

  • Indoors, lettering can last for several decades without losing its sheen.
  • Outdoors, durability depends on exposure and substrate, but can reach 10 years with a protective varnish.

Our painters use only premium grade paints designed to withstand the elements and UV rays.

The CAP Peintre en lettres disappeared in the 1990s-2000s, but the profession continues thanks to specialised training, apprenticeships with artisans, or self-teaching. Today, certain graphic designers, calligraphers, or graffiti artists are retraining for this manual trade. Recognised sign painters, such as Tristan Gesret or Virginie, pass on their know-how through internships, workshops, or private training courses.

The trade of a sign painter emerged with the development of commerce and signage in the 19th century. Very popular until the 1960s, it declined with the advent of adhesive materials and digital printing.
For a few years now, it has been experiencing a spectacular revival: brands are looking for authentic, unique and artisanal signs. Social networks like Instagram or Pinterest are participating in this renaissance by highlighting the aesthetic of painted lettering and inspiring a new generation of artisans and customers.
